The majority of New York is located on an archipelago of islands on the East Coast of North America, the largest of which are Manhattan, Staten Island and Long Island. They form an excellent harbor, which is the original reason for the founding of the city and contribute to its growth as a transportation and commercial center. Hudson River, which flows into a tidal estuary in New York Bay, separates Long Island and Manhattan locations on the mainland New Jersey. The bay is connected to the Atlantic Ocean through the Strait of Staten Island and Brooklyn in the southwest corner of Long Island. Strait East River separates Long Island from Manhattan and the Bronx, most of New York is located in the continent, which in turn is separated from Manhattan to Harlem River strait.
